What is tDCS?

Trans-cranial Direct Current Stimulation (or tDCS), is a wearable device that emits a mild electrical current through areas of the brain.

This stimulates activity in the prefrontal cortex, which is responsible for mood regulation.

tDCS studies over the past 20+ years, have shown that people who suffer with depression or other illnesses that affect their mood, have low levels of activity in these areas of the brain.

By directing a mild electrical current into these areas on a regular basis, research has shown vast improvements in mood.

Flow tDCS and other research studies, have also shown significant improvement in anxiety and other neurological and neuro-biological disorders such as chronic pain, CPTSD, addictions and even has benefits for ADHD.

This treatment has only been available as an at home treatment for the past few years. The results from research by FLOW Neuroscience have been so positive that the NHS is now introducing it across the UK as a medication alternative and combined treatment for depression and anxiety.

It is not readily available from your GP yet, but it can be purchased directly from FLOW, or from a FLOW registered clinician at a discounted rate.

How tDCS for Depression and Anxiety Works

tDCS is a non-invasive medically approved device for treating depression and anxiety. It was discovered in 1801, and has slowly made advances in medical research, particularly over the last 25 years.

It works by stimulating brain activity in the prefrontal cortex, where mood regulation happens. Using the FLOW Neuroscience headset and app, you’ll be guided through a programme of use and you’ll be able to track your mood and progress.

tDCS for Depression and Anxiety FAQ

Do I need a diagnosis of depression or anxiety to sign up for tDCS?

No, you don’t need an official diagnosis of depression or anxiety to sign up for FLOW tDCS. If you resonate with fluctuating moods or generalised anxiety symptoms, tDCS could help you manage your mood and anxiety levels if you’re ready to take charge of your symptoms.

Yes, tDCS has been rigorously researched for many decades and has been clinically approved for use as a home treatment. FLOW tDCS has been approved by the NHS and has been available for home use for the past 4 years. You can find out more about their research and clinical trials on the FLOW Neuroscience website.

When you sign up to FLOW tDCS you’ll be given a protocol to follow, based on their research. You’ll start by using the headset 5 days a week for 30 minutes per day for 3 weeks. After this, you’ll be able to use the headset for 30 minutes 3 times per week.

Most people find that this is enough but if you have treatment resistant depression or complex trauma, we can safely set your schedule to stay at 5 days per week.

The headset can be used long term or you may wish to stop once you’ve reached your goals. The suggested minimum term is 10 weeks, and you can always come back to it if you need to later.

tDCS can be a great way to treat mild to moderate depression for many people. Like any treatment, there is never any guarantee that it will work for everyone and it may not be for you.

You’ll have a 30 day no questions asked money back guarantee when you receive your headset, so you can try it out and decide if it works for you.

As with every form of treatment, some people may experience some side effects. However, the majority of people experience little to no side effects, with the main ones being a tingling sensation or slight skin irritation at the treatment site.

No serious side effects have ever been reported.

Some other side effects can include:

  • Headaches
  • Tinnitus or increase in tinnitus symptoms
  • Pain, redness, itching or minor burns at the treatment site
  • Increased depression or anxiety
  • Fatigue, tiredness or sleep disruption

Side effects usually improve or resolve entirely with continued use and as your body adjusts to the treatment.
