What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is a therapeutic treatment that uses hypnosis to help create a state of deep focussed attention and relaxation while supporting you to release old emotions, change limiting beliefs, let go of emotional blocks or update unhelpful perspectives.
Hypnosis is a natural state of trance that your mind goes into when deeply relaxed, focussed or absorbed in something you are doing. The depth of trance you can go into will be different for everyone and can change on different days.
When you’re in a hypnotic state, whether light or deep trance, your mind is more open to learning and new ways of thinking about things. This is often called, suggestibility.
Using hypnotherapy, we use your minds’ natural ability to access this state to help you identify and shift core beliefs that may be driving unhelpful emotional triggers and behaviours.
This can be very effective for relieving anxiety, releasing trauma, letting go of unhealthy habits and changing how you see and feel about yourself.
You always remain in control, you’ll be aware of everything you are doing and saying and you will be able to come out of a trance whenever you want to.
Myths About Hypnotherapy
There are some common misconceptions about hypnotherapy, which have been around for many years. Most people are familiar with the image of stage hypnotism, where the hypnotist puts someone into a deep trance by clicking their fingers or waving a watch, and then getting them to do things they wouldn’t normally do.
This often gives people the idea that hypnosis is about mind control, where the hypnotist has a power over the person to make them change how they think and feel. However, this is not the aim of hypnotherapy, which is a collaborative process involving you in the change.
The truth is, all forms of therapy require you to be involved in the process. Hypnotherapy isn’t about switching your brain off and then fixing you while you drift off into a trance. Your mind is not broken and a hypnotherapist isn’t a magician who can “fix” you without you needing to do anything.
But it is a transformative type of therapy that can help you work through problems and process emotions in a creative way, that enables you to heal and move forward. This often speeds up the process of change naturally and result in achieving in several sessions what can take months (or even years) in talking therapy alone.
What Hypnotherapy is NOT:
- A magic pill that will cure all problems
- Special powers that I have to fix you
- A way to delete memories or things that have happened
- The ability to give you skills you don't already have
- A party trick to make you cluck like a chicken or meow like a cat
How Does Hypnotherapy Work?
Hypnotherapy can help with many forms of emotional issues, unhelpful beliefs and unwanted behaviours, by addressing the cause at the root of these issues. The nature of emotional struggles such as anxiety, depression, panic attacks or addictive behaviours, is that they develop in response to an emotional injury.
Just like the body knows how to heal an injury naturally once the conditions have been created… i.e. you just need to make sure the wound is clean and take care of it and the body does the rest! The mind also has it’s own natural way of healing emotional injuries.
What we now understand about traumatic experiences or events, is that it’s just not the things that happen to us that can cause lasting symptoms, but also how well the conditions are set up for us to process the emotional effects of the trauma. In fact, one of the most important factors in our ability to heal from challenging experiences, is whether we have another person available to co-regulate our emotions with.
After all, we are social beings who are wired for connection, and half of the healing from any kind of therapy comes from the feeling of being seen, understood, supported and cared for.

Hypnotherapy FAQ
What is a hypnotic trance?
A trance state is a state of focussed attention or awareness that your mind drifts in and out of naturally. It often happens when in deep learning or absorbed in something you enjoy doing. Trance can also be induced with relaxation techniques and guided visualisation.
What are the therapeutic benefits of trance?
Hypnotherapy uses trance states to help your mind move into a more flexible state of learning and become more open to suggestion. Because your conscious mind is linked to logical processing and the default mode network, it can sometimes block creative thinking and openness.
Being guided into a relaxed trance can help deactivate the default mode network and create more opportunities to process experiences, beliefs and needs more effectively.
How do I know if I can go into trance?
Everyone has the ability to go into trance, as it is a natural human phenomena. There are different depths of trance and everyone has their own experience of how deep they can go.
You probably go into trance several times a day without noticing it, because it’s usually such an everyday experience. If you’ve ever “zoned out” while watching a movie or having a conversation, that’s a trance. Or if you’ve found yourself arriving at a destination without remembering half the journey, that’s a trance!
Hypnotherapy can help you to access trance in whatever way works for you, no matter how deep you can go.
Does hypnotherapy work for everyone?
Like all forms of treatment, hypnotherapy may not work for everyone. Hypnotherapy is not a quick fix or magic pill that can solve all problems. Hypnosis is one way that you can reach the goals you want to achieve, and there are many other ways you can get there.
The report you have with the therapist can also affect how well the treatment works. You should feel comfortable and safe to be guided and open up with any therapist you are working with.
What seems to be most important when choosing any type of therapy is choosing a model that aligns with your world view and a therapist who you feel comfortable with.
Does hypnotherapy work better in person than online?
Online hypnotherapy is just as effective as in person hypnosis, and the methods used are the same whether in person or online. Hypnosis is a verbally guided form of therapy and because you” have your eyes closed for much of the time, you could be anywhere.
I work with clients all over the world using online hypnotherapy, and the results and experience are exactly the same as it would be in person.
In fact, many people prefer working online because it allows them to fit sessions around their day and they don’t have to travel. You can also work from the comfort of your own home, which can often be more relaxing for some people.
Are there any problems that hypnotherapy can't help?
Hypnotherapy can be a transformative solution for many issues people struggle with. Many hypnotherapists have areas of specialism so it is a good idea to work with someone who is familiar with the issues you wish to work on.
If you have an acute mental health diagnosis such as epilepsy, bipolar, schizophrenia, psychosis or personality disorder, it may be best to seek medical advice before starting hypnotherapy.
Always tell your hypnosis practitioner about any medical diagnosis to make sure hypnotherapy is right for you.
