What is Social Anxiety?

Social anxiety was a huge problem for me in the past, to the point that I dropped out of university after my second year.

I could no longer handle the crippling fear of being asked to contribute to classroom discussions. Or blushing bright red whenever I bumped into a classmate on the train.

Social events filled me with dread and the only way I knew to cope was to avoid them completely or drink to hide my low self-esteem.

But these strategies only led to more problems, and eventually I had to seek help.

In fact, this was how I first found hypnotherapy, and the effect was so powerful it is what led me on my journey to become a hypnotherapist myself.

What I didn’t realise back then was that I wasn’t shy or socially awkward. I carried a deep fear of being judged or rejected by others.

For me, this was rooted in early childhood experiences. Growing up I was regularly teased for being sensitive or making mistakes at home. And being a sensitive and neurodivergent child (unknowingly at the time), there was plenty of opportunities for me to be the scapegoat.

This led to a crippling fear of humiliation in later life, and deep core beliefs that I was different or “not good enough”.

Social anxiety can range from general feelings of anxiousness in social settings to extreme panic attacks in public.

However your symptoms show up, social anxiety hypnotherapy can help you feel calmer and more confident, and let go of the fear of being judged.

Signs You May Have Social Anxiety

Social anxiety symptoms vary from person to person and it doesn’t always seem visible on the outside. Some people with social anxiety have learned to mask these emotions and appear confident and outgoing to their friends.

For others, it may be excruciating to the point of not being able to leave the house. Or if you do push yourself, you may feel so uncomfortable that you feel everyone can see how anxious you are, making you field “weird”, “different” or like there’s something fundamentally wrong with you.

However it shows up for you, you are not alone! Many people suffer with social anxiety and it is nothing to be ashamed of.

Feeling uncomfortable or like you don’t fit in is not a crime, and you are not bad or unworthy. And, with the right form of treatment and support, social anxiety symptoms can be healed.

Some symptoms of social anxiety can include:

    • Fear of being judged, criticised or embarrassed in front of others
    • Overthinking conversations before, during and after social interactions
    • Avoiding social situations, events or speaking up out of fear
    • Feeling self-conscious about how you look, sound or come across
    • Blushing, sweating, shaking or feeling physically tense around others
    • Racing heart, tight chest or shortness of breath in social settings
    • Struggling with eye contact
    • Feeling exposed when attention is on you
    • Rehearsing what to say or going blank when speaking
    • Feeling safer when alone but lonely as a result
    • Using alcohol or other coping strategies to feel more confident socially
    • Feeling like you’re “performing” rather than being yourself
    • Harsh inner self-criticism or shame around feeling awkward
    • A sense of dread before meetings, calls, presentations or social gatherings

How Social Anxiety Hypnotherapy Can Help

This is where hypnotherapy for social anxiety can help. By addressing the root causes of painful social phobias, you can heal from past experiences and feel more comfortable with who you are.

Using powerful therapeutic techniques, we can resolve deeply held beliefs and fears linked to past experiences and let go of limiting beliefs.

You’ll no longer need old coping strategies like avoidance or self-medication and you’ll start feeling more comfortable in your skin in social settings.

Hypnotherapy healed my crippling social anxiety, so I know it can work for you too!

Hypnosis for social anxiety can help you to:

  • Identify and let go of unhelpful core beliefs
  • Resolve painful emotions from past experiences and relieve triggers
  • Develop a kinder, more compassionate view of yourself
  • Shift negative self-talk into a more encouraging, supportive inner voice
  • Build new experiences of feeling confident, updating your self-image and beliefs
  • Reduce physical anxiety symptoms like racing heart, shaking or urges to flee
  • Develop internal resources to regulate your nervous system and let go of overthinking

Unlike approaches that only manage symptoms or teach coping strategies, social anxiety hypnotherapy resolves the root causes. This creates the foundations for deeper, lasting change and allows you to show up feeling more confident and at ease in yourself in social settings.
