What is Performance Anxiety?

Performance anxiety can be a crippling experience which sabotages you from achieving your goals and experiencing joy in life.

It affects people from all walks of life and it can attach itself to any activity.

According to an article by Sports Aid, around 30-60% of athletes experience some form of performance anxiety. In fact, a study by PubMed showed that around 19-34% of elite athletes have a diagnosable anxiety condition.

The music profession also sees large numbers of performers struggling with anxiety issues every year.

But performance anxiety isn’t just an issue for people in high pressure jobs or lifestyles. It can affect you even in daily tasks or situations where you might fear being judged or seen as failing.

People who struggle with intimacy based performance anxiety often tell me it started as a fleeting thought, but then the fear created the reality. Once these kind of fears take over, it can be as though your mind sabotages you and hijacks your whole body.

But this is precisely why hypnotherapy is a great tool for overcoming performance anxiety, because whatever starts in the mind, can be solved in the mind too.

Using Cognitive Hypnotherapy, I help people to address the root cause of the fear and overcome mental blocks or self-sabotaging thoughts.

This helps to build new ways of seeing things and develop a sene of safety and belief in yourself. And once you have self-belief, anything is possible.

Signs of Performance Anxiety

Everyone experiences performance anxiety differently, and for some it can be more intense than for others. Most people feel anxious or experience nerves when doing things that feel scary, and it’s natural to feel that way. However, performance anxiety becomes a problem when it stops you from doing the things you love doing or gets in the way of relationships.

Some signs of performance anxiety can include:

  • Going blank or dissociating under pressure or when feeling observed
  • Physical reactions such as heart pounding or racing, sweating, rapid breathing, twitching and/or tingling sensations
  • Fearing embarrassment or being convinced you’ll humiliate yourself
  • Panicking for hours or even days or weeks before an event or situation
  • Negatively ruminating or fixating on things that could go wrong
  • Superstitious or fantastical thoughts about seeing signs that things will go wrong
  • Thinking that other people see you as a failure or not as good as other people
  • Blushing intensely or freezing up when feeling under the spotlight
  • Feeling numb or shut off from emotions and unable to connect with others
  • Intense desire to flee or leave the situation, fantasising about ways to leave or drop out
  • Using safety behaviours such as drugs, non-prescription medication or alcohol to stay calm

How Hypnotherapy Can Help

Cognitive Hypnotherapy can help ease performance anxiety by resolving past experiences that have formed unhelpful, limiting beliefs. It also works by reducing triggers and teaching your nervous system self-regulation techniques.

For some people, performance anxiety can be traced back to an experience in early life such as a teacher humiliating your in front of the class or embarrassing yourself in a school stage performance. And for others, it can be linked to low self-esteem, general anxiety or fears of not being good enough.

However, some people find that although they have good self-worth and a belief in their abilities, intrusive thoughts and fears can still stop them in their tracks.

The good thing is that Cognitive Hypnotherapy is a flexible model that works with your way of experiencing the world around you. Together, we explore what is at the root of your unique experience, and use a range of powerful techniques to help you shift limiting beliefs or past experiences, and move back into flow.

Performance Anxiety Hypnotherapy FAQ

Why choose hypnotherapy for performance anxiety instead of talking therapy?

Many people who come to me for performance anxiety hypnosis have often tried other treatments like CBT and talking therapies. Some say it helped in some ways but that it didn’t solve the problem. For many people, talking therapy can help to understand where the problem started, but they say it hasn’t helped shift the feelings they experience in the moment.

This is because the triggers lay in your nervous system, and are linked to memories and beliefs stored in your subconscious mind. Because hypnotherapy works on a subconscious level, it allows us to “undo” a problem in the same way it was created.

It also helps to teach your nervous system new ways to respond to challenging situations and to feel safer in your body and mind. This helps to create new neural pathways that update old beliefs, build more calm and confidence.

This is why many people find that hypnotherapy works better for them to overcome issues such as performance anxiety. After all, you can’t talk your way out of something that you didn’t talk your way into!

Yes, one of the great things about Cognitive Hypnotherapy is that you don’t need to know where the problem started or what beliefs are causing it. We’ll explore this together in our sessions, but even if you can’t find an exact cause, there are many exercises we can do to get you unstuck from your problem.

Cognitive Hypnotherapy uses a combination of techniques drawing from various models, such as NLP, Gestalt and traditional hypnotherapy. This means we have a range of techniques in our toolkit to help you unlock your problem and shift your perspective. We work with your model of the world and help you find a way to change how you see and experience it.

The number of hypnotherapy sessions it takes to begin seeing results can vary from person to person. It can also depend on the cause of the problem and how ready you are to change.

Most people find that between 3-6 sessions gets them to where they want to be. While for some it can be more or even less.

People with a history of complex trauma may need several sessions to deal with the underlying causes before they can begin to feel safe in high pressure environments.

I offer a free 30 minute call to discuss your needs and work out a plan that suits you.

Yes, most people feel quite relaxed after a hypnotherapy session and are able to go about the rest of their day as normal.

If you know that something emotional may come up you may prefer to book your sessions after work or at a time when you can take some time to reflect or wind down.

I offer sessions in the afternoon or evening so you can choose the time that works best for you. Feel free to bring this up in our initial call if you’d like more guidance on this.
