What is Anxiety?
If you know what it feels like to wake up in the morning feeling unexplainable dread, or like a wave of panic comes over you, suffocating and spiralling you downward for no reason… this is what heightened anxiety can feel like, and it can feel stout of control that you want to escape from your own skin.
When you’re out with friends you may be good at acting “okay”, but on the inside you feel like screaming and want to run away.Â
Anxiety is a natural human emotion which everyone experiences from time to time. When times are stressful it’s natural for levels of anxiety to increase. In fact, we need a certain amount of anxiety to motivate us to do the things that are important to us.
When anxiety becomes an issue, it’s usually because something happened that overwhelmed your nervous system and created a heightened fear response.
Some people are more prone to developing anxiety issues, due to factors such parents passing down their own fears or beliefs, childhood trauma, being a sensitive child, neurodivergence or other genetic factors.
Being bullied or teased in childhood can also lead to hyperawareness and feelings of being different or bad. This can lead to a fear of being humiliated, rejected or “found out” as not being good enough later in life.
Heightened anxiety can make you hypersensitive of how you look and feel, and cause bodily sensations or movements that feel unnatural. This can create a feedback loop, making you worry about people seeing how anxious you are and judging you as “different” or “strange”.
How Does Cognitive Hypnotherapy for Anxiety Work?
Cognitive Hypnotherapy for anxiety works by targeting the root cause or core belief at the heart of the issue. Heightened anxiety is most often a reaction to an earlier experience or learned belief, that is trying to keep you safe. By resolving the fears around the cause of the anxiety, it is possible to change how your mind experiences things in the present.Â
Cognitive Hypnotherapy works by activating your brain’s natural process of neuroplasticity. This means that we are able to break connections to past experiences that are affecting how you experience things in the present.
Doing this creates a new set of neural pathways, helping change unhelpful beliefs, reducing or completely eliminate extreme nervous system reactions.Â
Anxiety issues that Cognitive Hypnotherapy for anxiety can help with include:
- Excessive worry, compulsive over-thinking or ruminationÂ
- Panic attacks or fearing panic attacksÂ
- Avoiding social or other everyday activities due to fear of panic or overwhelm
- Hyper-vigilance around other people’s perceptions of you or around how anxious you appear to be
- Fear or belief that something bad will happen when there are no signs of danger
- Avoiding essential activities such as travelling or leaving the house out of fear that something bad will happen
- Intense physical reactions such as pounding heart, shaking, sweating profusely, dizziness or feinting due to common situations and levels of stress
- Derealisation, depersonalisation, dissociation or fearing that you are losing your mind
- Trouble sleeping due to an overactive mind, playing back situations looking for signs of danger or reasons not to trust othersÂ
- Using drugs or alcohol to numb out intense fears, overwhelming thoughts or panic attacksÂ
What Causes Anxiety Issues?
Anyone can experience anxiety issues, it’s not a sign of being weak or that there’s something wrong with you. Anxiety issues can develop for a number of reasons. Sometimes it’s starts in childhood and for others it can be a reaction to stressful events in adulthood.Â
This study by the Mental Health Foundation showed that 73% of adults reported feelings of anxiousness with 26% stating that it was severe enough to disrupt their daily lives. While the Office for National Statistics 2021 study demonstrated that 8 million people in the UK live with an anxiety disorder.
Everyone’s tolerance to stress is different and some types of stress are so overwhelming to the nervous system, that it can leave a lasting imprint on your subconscious.
This can sometimes cause your mind to go into a state of overprotection, where the fear response acts like a warning signal to stop you from moving towards a perceived danger.
This is helpful when there is actual danger ahead, but if the trigger is an everyday situation or something you need to do, such as take the bus, it can be very limiting to your quality of life.
Some Common Causes of Anxiety Issues
- Instability in childhood, moving around a lot, family dysfunction, separation or childhood trauma
- Traumatic incidents in childhood or adulthood, especially if unresolved, unsupported or untreated
- Experiences that left you feeling helpless, trapped, overwhelmed or out of control
- Bereavement, grief or loss of a loved one at any age
- Prolonged exposure to stress or intense situations
- Repeated stressful life events that are out of your control
- Involvement in or witnessing extreme violence, physical harm, sexual assault, fatalities or acts of terorr
- Domestic abuse, narcissistic abuse, coercive control or bullying
Why Choose Cognitive Hypnotherapy For Anxiety?
Hypnotherapy is a great way to overcome anxiety issues because it deals with the causes on a subconscious level.
By resolving past experiences and updating old beliefs stored in memories of stressful situations, hypnotherapy can help ease your nervous system and update subconscious beliefs at the root of the problem.
Because your mind on a neural level does not know the difference between you imagining something and a real event (close your eyes and imagine biting into a lemon and you’ll see what I mean when your mouth fills with saliva!) hypnosis can be used to create new experiences that change how feel and respond to situations.
We may also use self-hypnosis techniques which you can use when needed, helping you to feel more in control and create new beliefs of being able to cope with stressful situations.
I have helped over 1200 clients overcome fears and phobias using hypnotherapy, including:
- Public speaking anxiety
- Fear of flying or other public transport
- Arachnophobia
- Panic attacks
- Fear of blushing/erythrophobiaÂ
- Performance anxiety
- Generalised anxiety
- AgoraphobiaÂ
And many other unique experiences of anxiety!

Anxiety Hypnotherapy FAQ
How can hypnotherapy help anxiety?
Hypnotherapy can help relieve symptoms of anxiety by reprocessing past experiences linked to stress and overwhelm, and helping your nervous system learn to regulate itself during and after stressful experiences. Hypnosis can help access subconscious memories and experiences stored in your nervous system, and help update old beliefs that may be affecting how safe you feel. We may also teach you self-hypnosis techniques that help you train your nervous system to relax in times of worry or stress.
Is anxiety hypnotherapy safe to do online?
Yes, anxiety hypnotherapy is considered a safe form of treatment to experience online when performed by a qualified practitioner. Hypnotherapy works exactly the same online as in person, and many people find they can relax more from the comfort of their own home, and may even find it more relaxing with the use of headphones.
How do I know if hypnotherapy will work for me?
One of the benefits of Cognitive Hypnotherapy and inner child work is that there’s no need to enter a deep trance state for the therapy to be effective. We work with lighter trance states, where you remain aware and engaged throughout the process. The real change comes from exploring and resolving old emotions, experiences and beliefs — not from how deeply hypnotised you are.
Will hypnotherapy work for me if my anxiety is linked to trauma?
Anxiety hypnotherapy is very effective for trauma based anxiety, especially when performed by a trauma informed therapist. I have trained in several trauma focused models, allowing me to work safely with anxiety linked to trauma. Because Cognitive Hypnotherapy is an integrative model, we may use techniques from models such as EMDR/IEMT, and other models effective for dealing with trauma, within our sessions.
How many hypnotherapy sessions will I need for low self-esteem?
The number of hypnotherapy sessions needed can vary depending on the underlying causes and severity of your anxiety issues. Many people begin to notice positive changes within 3–6 sessions. However, if your anxiety is linked to significant trauma or abuse, deeper work may be needed and the process can take longer. In some cases, longer-term therapy can be beneficial for resolving more deeply rooted trauma based anxiety patterns.
I offer a free consultation where we can talk through your situation and create a therapy plan tailored to your needs.
