What is Trauma?
When thinking about trauma, many people still associate the term with extreme life threatening events or abuse. However, it’s not just the “big T” stuff that can cause lasting effects of trauma.
Trauma itself is not the events that happen to you, but the effects of an overwhelmed nervous system that lacked the ability to regulate back to safety during or after a traumatic experience.
Research by Dr Gabor Maté and other experts in the field has shown that even the most traumatic events can be recovered from, as long as there is the support and safety provided to help process the experience and regulate the nervous system.
When those elements are unavailable to us in times of intense fear or overwhelm, this is when trauma makes a lasting imprint on the mind and body.
Trauma can be experienced in many ways, and how long the effects last depends on factors such as:
- Your ability to move to safety during or after the event
- Whether there is someone available to support you
- How intense the experience is
- The level of physical damage or life changing impact
- Whether it is a one off event or continued prolonged exposure
This is why attachment trauma and childhood trauma has such a lasting impact. Attachment trauma or abuse in childhood often happens at the hands of the people you are reliant on for safety and support.
If the people who are supposed to support you are the ones doing the harm, there’s no way for your nervous system to move to safety or safe person to co-regulate with.
Signs of Lasting Effects of Trauma
The effects of trauma can show up in many ways. Symptoms and their intensity can differ from person to person and the type and severity of of trauma can determine how you experience these.
For some people the effects of trauma can show up as anxiety, depression, addictions or intense flashbacks. And for others it may present as dissociation or acting out in relationships.
The table below describes some of the different types of trauma and their potential lasting effects.
Different types of trauma and their effects can include:
Why Hypnosis is an Effective Trauma Therapy
Trauma hypnotherapy can be a safe an effective way for healing the effects of trauma. Because Cognitive Hypnotherapy is an integrative model, I also combine EMDR/IEMT and inner child work to help people to process traumatic experiences or memories and repair nervous system overwhelm.
Hypnotherapy helps to heal trauma by creating a sense of internal safety and helping release emotions and beliefs that formed during traumatic events.
When supported and guided by an experienced and trauma informed hypnotherapist, the therapeutic relationship itself can have a powerful healing effect. Especially where attachment trauma has imprinted beliefs of being alone, unsafe in connection or feelings of shame.

Trauma Hypnotherapy FAQ
Is trauma hypnotherapy safe online?
Yes, when performed by a qualified and trauma informed practitioner, hypnotherapy for trauma is a safe and effective treatment. I am trained in trauma informed models for dealing with different symptoms of trauma, such as eye movement therapies, Post Induction Therapy and trauma informed hypnotherapy techniques.
Working online also means that you can stay in the safety of your home and you won’t have to travel after a session of processing emotional issues.
Will hypnotherapy work if I can't remember the traumatic event?
Yes, the good thing about hypnotherapy is that you don’t need to remember specific events or memories for it to work. The subconscious stores memories and information in different ways, and we can work with a feeling or emotion that is affecting you now even when there’s no memory of what happened.
It is common to dissociate from traumatic events when they happen, especially as a child. Inner child hypnotherapy is an effective way to support childhood parts of you with emotions and beliefs they may still be carrying without needing the full details of the past.
Do I need to be able to forgive to heal trauma?
Forgiveness is a personal choice and it is no one’s place to say whether you should or shouldn’t forgive someone who has harmed you. Anger is an appropriate emotion in response to harm or abuse, and it is often a reaction to feeling powerless.
Hypnotherapy can help you process anger and feelings of powerlessness experienced from trauma. Many people find they are able to move forward once their anger has been processed, and they may forgive the person who harmed them or make peace with what happened.
Some people find that the person they find forgiveness for is themselves, which can free them from feelings of shame or unworthiness connected to trauma or abuse.
Will I need to relive memories of trauma in hypnotherapy sessions?
There is no need to relive traumatic memories to heal them in hypnotherapy. Sometimes a memory might come up and if so, you’ll be guided to move through it or approach it in a way that helps change how you feel about it.
As a trauma informed and experienced trauma hypnotherapist, I am able to notice when a memory is overwhelming or too triggering, and I will guide you back to safety.
We may also use grounding techniques or other self-regulation methods that you can continue using whenever you need them. This is a great tool for helping you build confidence and self-reliance in response to triggers.
How many hypnotherapy sessions will I need for trauma?
The number of hypnotherapy sessions you need depends on the severity of the trauma and other factors such as duration and symptoms. For many people 6-12 sessions can be enough to find relief from trauma symptoms. But others may need longer term support.
For survivors of extreme or prolonged abuse, long term treatment may be needed.
I offer a free 30 minute consultation where we can discuss your needs and create a plan that works for you.
