What is Addiction and How Does it Work?

Addiction can be defined as any uncontrollable or compulsive behaviour or substance use that you are unable to resist, regardless of negative consequences to you or others around you.

Many people struggle with addictions at some point in life, even if considered a low risk addiction like caffeine or phone use.

In fact, according to a study conducted by Taking Action Addiction in 2024, almost half of adults in the UK have experienced or know someone affected by addiction.

How Addictions Work

Addiction works by increasing your tolerance to dopamine in response to a stimulus. Dopamine is a chemical messenger which is triggered in the brain when you do something pleasurable.

It is what gives you a sense of reward and satisfaction and plays an important role in motivation and mood regulation.

Some substances or behaviours trigger a high dopamine release, giving you a high reward sensation.

This can cause your brain to see this activity or substance as a high value, creating an intense urge to seek it out again.

This mimics a survival response, which can make it almost impossible to resist the urge.

When you become addicted, your brain needs higher and higher amounts of dopamine to feel a sense of reward. This is why your tolerance increases and you feel like you need more and more in order to get the same feeling you first had.

Signs of Addiction

If you’re wondering if you might be addicted to something, it’s possible that something feels out of your control. You may have tried to get on top of it for a while but find you keep going back. Addiction is nothing to be ashamed of and it’s okay to need help. If you’re wondering if you’re addicted to a substance or behaviour, here are some signs to look out for.

Some signs of addiction can include:

  • Feeling unable to stop doing something even though you want to or know you should
  • Becoming anxious, panicky, agitated or angry when you don’t have access to a substance, object or behaviour
  • Being unable to moderate usage, even with the best intentions to do so
  • Obsessively thinking about a substance, object or behaviour or making plans to use it throughout the day
  • Feeling irritable, aggravated, nauseous or unwell when deprived of access to a substance or behaviour
  • Putting your use above other important needs such as food, relationships, moral, ethical or legal responsibilities
  • In extreme cases losing contact with reality, losing your job, home, relationship or family in favour of using

How Hypnosis for Addiction Can Help

All addictions are trying to serve a purpose, no matter how damaging or risky they become. For some people, the substance or behaviour started as a release or a way to wind down, and became a habit they couldn’t break.

For others, the addiction provides an escape from a life that feels unfulfilling, empty or hopeless, making the addiction a source of happiness or relief. This is especially true for people who have experienced trauma in their lives or grew up in a dysfunctional family.

Some people find connection through addictions, which may be a sign of loneliness or a deep need for intimacy in their lives. It might start out feeling fulfilling or exciting, but eventually leads to painful cycles of abusive relationships, toxic behaviours or even more risky addictions.

Hypnosis for addiction works by identifying the need that the addiction is fulfilling and gently supporting you to break the association between the behaviour and the reward.

It doesn’t rely on will power or behaviour changes. We work towards a natural desire to stop the behaviour. Sometimes this can even create a repulsion or feeling of disconnection towards it.

Hypnosis can also help you develop more mindfulness around the urges you experience and help you respond in a healthier way.

Hypnosis for Addiction FAQ

How can hypnotherapy help overcome addiction?

Hypnosis for addiction works by identifying what the substance or behaviour is doing for you, and helping to create new, healthier ways of meeting the need. It can also help break the association with the behaviour and reward, and help you develop internal resources to respond differently to urges.

Yes, you need to be ready to stop your addiction in order for hypnosis or any therapy to work. Hypnosis cannot make you do anything you don’t want to do and it is not a magic wand. Like all forms of therapy, hypnotherapy requires you to be invested in creating the change you want to see in your life.

No, I don’t request any of my clients to stop their addiction before starting hypnotherapy sessions. The aim isn’t to get you to use your will power or battle through your addictive urges. We work towards a natural shift in your desire to stop and for your perception around the addictive behaviour to change.

If your addiction has reached the point where you need to seek out rehab, then you may need to wait to start hypnotherapy. If you have a physical dependency as part of your addiction, you should work with a medical professional to safely reduce or detox from your addiction before starting hypnotherapy.

The number of hypnotherapy sessions you will need can vary from person to person. It may also be dependent on how long your addiction has been active and the reason the addiction started. For more habit level addictions 3-6 sessions may be enough. But some people with more longer term addictions may need 6-12 sessions or more.

If you have experienced extreme trauma or abuse in childhood, you may need longer term support to address the issues beneath the addiction before tackling the addiction itself. We’ll discuss your needs and make a plan to suit you in our initial consultation.
