Trauma Therapy in London

Trauma Therapy London, woman wearing words like shame on her face and neck

Our understanding of trauma and its affects on human development is continuously growing. There was a time when it was almost a taboo to use the word. The fear and shame that are associated with it can be triggering in themselves. Thankfully this changing, along with the conversation and training around it. Which makes it easier to find a trauma informed therapist to work with from anywhere in the world. I offer trauma therapy in London and worldwide online, for people struggling with trauma of all kinds.

Trauma comes in many forms, and it’s not always the big life changing situations like disaster, abuse, loss of a loved one or injury etc., that can lead to a prolonged trauma response. Emotional injuries during in our childhood can lead to what we now know as Complex-PTSD. Even in later life, experiences such as betrayal, abuse, exposure to traumatic events or images can leave an indelible mark on our psyche.

Trauma, is not an event or the things that happen to us. It is the result of an overwhelmed nervous system that has not been able to process an acutely stressful experience. It is possible to experience a traumatic event, but not have prolonged effects of trauma. In order for this to happen, we need the environment and support to re-regulate our nervous system either at the time, or after the event.

This is where trauma therapy can help. Processing traumatic experiences or memories with a qualified and experienced practitioner, can help you to release stored stress and emotions. Effectively it can be like putting out the fire you feel inside.

How I Provide Trauma Therapy in London

Now that we understand the mind-body connection, we know that healing trauma needs a holistic approach. Dealing with the symptoms of trauma is not enough. We need to address the root cause of the emotional injury. This way it is possible to release the person from the symptoms they experience as a result.

And the good news is, that it’s not necessary to relive the trauma or dredge up the past in order to move on.

Using Cognitive Hypnotherapy, I have helped hundreds of people to resolve past trauma and start living a fuller and happier life. Because it is a combined approach, Cognitive Hypnotherapy allows us to work flexibly to suit each person’s needs.

Some people find working through a memory and releasing the trauma within it is helpful. But for others, a more subtle approach works better.

This is how Cognitive Hypnotherapy for trauma is different. As a trauma informed therapist, I have trained in additional modalities to help people recover from trauma without having to relive disturbing events.

Therapies such as Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR), have changed our approach to treating symptoms of PTSD. We now have access to a range of eye movement therapies, such as IEMT (Integral Eye Movement Therapy), which are more gentle and can be incorporated into other types of therapy.

Having trained in IEMT, I often combine this with other trauma informed therapies when working with clients experiencing PTSD/CPTSD. Depending on your experience, we may use Post Induction Therapy (PIT), or Parts Therapy, to help resolve painful symptoms.

Types of Trauma Cognitive Hypnotherapy Can Help With:

  • Childhood neglect, emotional, physical or sexual abuse
  • Relational trauma/attachment wounding (usually caused by early stressful life experiences such as homelessness, family breakdown, physical or mental health issues in the family etc.)
  • Grief trauma (during childhood or adult life)
  • Extreme or life threatening experiences
  • Physical injury that may have lead to panic disorder, phobia or flashbacks
  • Psychological trauma, due to exposure to traumatic events or images
  • PTSD/C-PTSD caused by any event or experience at any stage of life
