Hypnotherapy for Social Anxiety

Let go of the fear of judgment and quieten your critical inner voice

Social anxiety was a huge problem for me in the past, to the point that I dropped out of university after my second year. I could no longer handle the crippling fear of classroom discussions. Or blushing bright red whenever I bumped into a classmate on the train. Social events filled me with dread and the only way I knew to cope was to avoid them completely or drink myself numb. But these strategies only led to more problems, and eventually I had to seek help. In fact, this was how I first found hypnosis, and the effect was so powerful it is what led me on my journey to become a hypnotherapist myself. I now offer social anxiety hypnosis in London and worldwide online, helping hundreds of people recover too.

What I didn’t realise back then was that I wasn’t shy or socially awkward. I carried a deep fear of being judged or rejected by others.

For me, this was rooted in early experiences from childhood. Growing up I was regularly shamed and humiliated for being sensitive or making mistakes. And being a sensitive and neurodivergent child (unknowingly at the time), there was plenty of opportunities for me to be the scapegoat.

Where Social Anxiety Comes From

I remember my parents teasing me in front of my siblings when I would blush easily, going redder and redder with every comment they made.

Being undiagnosed dyslexic meant I struggled to keep up and pay attention at school, which only led to more negative attention from teachers and peers.

Being different became a derogatory label I learned about myself. And coming from a dysfunctional family, which led to bullying of its own kind, only amplified this belief.

Now, when people come to me for social anxiety hypnosis, they often share similar experiences that have shaped their self-image.

Or sometimes it can be linked to other forms of negative experiences from school or other public settings, such as being made fun of for getting something wrong in class, or having an accident on stage etc.

Whatever it was, these early experiences create imprints in your subconscious that drive how safe you feel in social settings.

This primes your awareness later in life, to look for signs that you’re being judged or not accepted, which in turn affects how you show up.

You might find yourself shrinking away from conversations or desperately trying to avoid eye contact with people, so they don’t talk to you.

And of course, the more awkward you feel, the more awkward others feel around you, creating the feedback loop that your subconscious reads as confirmation of your fears of being “weird”, “different”, “difficult to be around” etc.

Common Signs of Social Anxiety

  • Intense fear of being judged, criticised or embarrassed by others
  • Overthinking conversations before, during and long after social interactions
  • Avoiding social situations, events or speaking up
  • Feeling self-conscious about how you look, sound or come across
  • Blushing, sweating, shaking or feeling physically tense around others
  • Racing heart, tight chest or shortness of breath in social settings
  • Struggling with eye contact or feeling exposed when attention is on you
  • Rehearsing what to say repeatedly or going blank when speaking
  • Feeling safer when alone but lonely as a result
  • Saying yes to things out of fear of rejection, or saying no out of fear of being seen
  • Using alcohol or other coping strategies to feel more confident socially
  • Feeling like you’re “performing” rather than being yourself
  • Harsh inner self-criticism after social interactions
  • A sense of dread before meetings, calls, presentations or social gatherings

If you can relate to 4 or more of the above experiences, you may benefit from hypnotherapy. I offer social anxiety hypnosis in London or from anywhere in the world online.

How Hypnotherapy Helps with Social Anxiety

This is where hypnotherapy for social anxiety can help. With gentle guidance and compassionate enquiry, we can uncover those early experiences and help release the grip they hold over you.

Using powerful therapeutic techniques, we can resolve deeply held beliefs and fears holding you back.

You’ll let go of old coping strategies like avoidance or self-medication and start feeling more comfortable in your skin in social settings.

It worked for me, so I know it can work for you too!

Hypnosis for social anxiety can help you to:

  • Access the root of social fear — noticing where it formed and what keeps it alive.
  • Separate present reality from past fear triggers, so old fears stop dictating current responses.
  • Develop a kinder, more compassionate view of yourself.
  • Shift negative self-talk into encouraging, supportive inner messages.
  • Build new neural patterns of confident behaviour rather than anxious reactions.
  • Reduce physical anxiety symptoms — like racing heart, shaking or urges to flee.
  • Develop internal resources to regulate your nervous system and let go of overthinking.

Unlike approaches that only manage symptoms, hypnotherapy addresses what lies underneath — creating the foundations for deeper, lasting change.

My Approach: Cognitive Hypnotherapy and Inner Child Therapy

As a Cognitive Hypnotherapist and Inner Child specialist offering social anxiety hypnosis in London and worldwide online, I bring together scientific and person-centred models that encourage deep shifts in psychological and nervous system responses.

This isn’t a passive experience where something happens to you. It’s a collaborative journey, where we explore your personal history — including the early beliefs that may have seeded social anxiety — and create new experiences of self-trust and confidence.

My own path to healing deeply informs how I work. Having faced crippling anxiety, panic attacks and low self-worth that felt utterly impossible to escape. Traditional therapy helped with awareness, but it was hypnotherapy and NLP work that unlocked real belief change for me. That transformation became not just my healing — but my life’s calling.

What to Expect in Sessions

During your hypnotherapy sessions with me in London or online:

  • We start with a free consultation, where we discuss your experience of social anxiety and your goals.
  • When it comes to the hypnosis part, you’ll be guided to use your inner world experience, memories and imagination, to uncover deep rooted fears or belief and begin to change them.
  • You’ll be aware of everything you and I are saying and doing, and you’ll be able to open your eyes at any time.
  • We’ll help you make shifts in your inner experience of yourself, giving you real world confidence to go out and be the version of you that you want to be.
  • Many clients begin to experience noticeable shifts within a few sessions, with deeper transformation unfolding over time.

This work isn’t about forcing bravery. It’s about naturally shifting towards feeling calm from the inside out, so social situations feel manageable — and even become enjoyable!

Social Anxiety Hypnosis London – FAQs

Can hypnotherapy really help with social anxiety?

Yes. Hypnotherapy works with the subconscious mind — where social anxiety patterns are learned and stored. Rather than just coping with symptoms, cognitive hypnotherapy helps identify the original experiences and beliefs that created the anxiety, allowing them to be updated and released. Many clients notice a reduction in fear, self-consciousness and avoidance after just a few sessions.

This varies from person to person, but many clients experience meaningful change within 3–6 sessions. During your free consultation, we’ll discuss your history and goals so I can give you a more personalised recommendation.

What to expect:

You’ll be guided through mental exercises and imagery techniques, usually with your eyes closed. You remain fully aware and in control throughout. We work together to:

  • Understand how your social anxiety developed
  • Reframe unhelpful beliefs
  • Calm the nervous system
  • Build confidence and emotional safety in social situations

Absolutely. Hypnotherapy is a safe, evidence-informed approach when practiced by a qualified therapist. I work in a trauma-aware, client-led way, ensuring sessions feel empowering rather than overwhelming.

Yes. Social anxiety often shows up physically — blushing, sweating, shaking, racing heart or panic. Hypnotherapy helps retrain the body’s stress response, so these reactions reduce naturally as your mind feels safer in social environments.

I offer online hypnotherapy from my London based practice, which you can join from anywhere in the world. Online sessions are just as effective and ideal if travel or social anxiety itself feels like a barrier.
