The Truth About Drinking and why You Can't Stop

Do you feel stuck in a cycle of drinking that you can’t seem to break out of? Maybe you keep planning to take a break for a month or more, but find yourself slipping back into old habits within 2 weeks. Or maybe you want to improve your relationship with alcohol but find you can’t control it once you go past 2 drinks. Many people come to me for stop drinking hypnosis in London and worldwide online for similar reasons.

This was my old pattern too… I knew I wanted to stop but for some reason I just couldn’t keep myself from going back for more.

Binge driving on nights our often led to blackout, leaving myself and sometimes my friends in dangerous and embarrassing situations.

For me, alcohol had played a big part in my life and all my relationships. I associated alcohol with having fun and I had built my identity around partying and being able to “handle” drugs and alcohol.

But I wasn’t “handling” it. My life was becoming unmanageable and it was beginning to show.

One drink would lead to another and before I knew it, anything was on the table. I’d often wake up in a daze, hardly remembering the night before and sometimes how I’d got to where I was.

Those mornings were filled with fear and anxiety about what I might have said or done.

Comments from friends such as “you were so drunk last night”, or “you had a good time didn’t you”, would fill me with dread and shame.

Trying to piece together events of the night often led to more drinking to try and ease the “hang-xiety” and physical withdrawal.

What was Really Beneath My Drinking

What I didn’t realise was that anxiety was at the heart of all my drinking issues.

I had been using alcohol and other substances for so long, I hadn’t realised how much I was covering up my low self-esteem. Until I wanted to stop, and the waves of panic started to hit me.

I’d relied on alcohol to “loosen me up” for so long, I didn’t know who I was without it. I felt socially awkward, hyper-aware of myself, and plagued by thoughts of not being liked.

It seemed easier to just lean into the drink, but with each binging session, my confidence got lower and lower.

It was like a vicious circle of social anxiety. I’d drink to “take the edge off” at social events, but I’d end up feeling more anxious with every embarrassing night out. But each time, the shame was too much, and a hair of the dog seemed the only cure.

That’s why, for me, willpower alone was not enough. I needed to address the my reasons for drinking before I could get a handle on it.

Hypnotherapy helped me do that. And that’s how I help others stop drinking with hypnosis or improve their relationship with alcohol now too.

Understanding the Patterns Beneath the Drinking

Drinking can be fun and isn’t a problem if done responsibly. For lots of people, drinking can be an occasional part of life that happens at social events or the odd evening with dinner etc.

But for some, it becomes a way to manage something uncomfortable — stress, loneliness, old memories, or emotional pain. Over time, it can become a crutch to lean on, making you feel like you can’t manage without it.

That’s because the subconscious mind — the part of you that stores deep memories, fears, beliefs and coping strategies — starts to associate alcohol with relief.

When this happens, it can start to feel like drinking is the only way to manage those feelings and the thought of taking it away can trigger anxiety itself.

Moreover, if you grew up around alcoholism or have a history of trauma or abuse, you may have more addictive tendencies yourself. Research has shown that people with a history of complex trauma or dysfunctional family dynamics, have a higher chance of developing addictions later in life.

Plus, genetic traits can be passed down from parents with addiction issues, making those born to parents with addiction issues more likely to develop addictive tendencies too.

The "Forbidden Fruit Effect"

The problem with willpower-based attempts to stop drinking, is that it reinforces a sense of missing out. The more you fight against the urge to drink, the more you feel deprived from something you like to do.

This is called “the forbidden fruit effect”, because the more you are not allowed something, the more you want it.

That’s why white knuckling through abstinence is counterproductive, and why it is more effective to focus on changing your beliefs around alcohol rather than just your behaviours. When you do this, letting go is easy, and the way you see alcohol begins to change naturally.

How Hypnotherapy Can Help with Alcohol Issues

When people come to me for stop drinking hypnosis in London or elsewhere online, they often say they don’t know why they can’t seem to stop.

Using hypnotherapy and sometimes Inner Child Therapy, we start by exploring what alcohol is doing for you. It could be that it relaxes you and makes you less anxious or brings out the more confident side of your personality.

If there’s a fear or negative self-belief that the alcohol is covering up, we’ll discover what that is and how the alcohol may be pushing it down.

Through gentle guidance and deep exploration, hypnosis to stop drinking can help you:

  • Identify core beliefs that keep the drinking cycle in place, such as “I’m not interesting enough”, “people won’t like the real me”, “I can’t be myself without alcohol” etc.
  • Explore and ease emotional triggers that alcohol may be trying to numb out
  • Develop your confidence and sense of identity without alcohol
  • Teach your nervous system new, healthier ways to regulate through stress and anxiety
  • Resolve past trauma and negative experiences that you may be trying to soothe

Once the reasons for your drinking issues have been resolved, you may decide you want to stop drinking altogether. Or you may feel that you just want a better relationship with alcohol.

This decision often comes naturally when the unconscious need to drink has been lifted. And some people find they no longer even want to drink alcohol once they’ve realised they don’t actually “need” it anymore.

Where many approaches focus only on surface behaviour changes which rely on willpower alone, hypnotherapy allows you to transform from the inside out. The result is a shift that feels natural, deeper and more sustainable — not just a game of resistance.

This is why stop drinking hypnosis is a gentle yet powerful process of change — a process of healing rather than punishment.

Stop Drinking Hypnosis London - Frequently Asked Questions:

How does hypnotherapy help with drinking problems?
Hypnotherapy works by addressing the underlying reasons you drink, rather than focusing only on stopping the behaviour.

Drinking is often linked to anxiety, low self-esteem, emotional pain or old coping patterns stored in the subconscious mind. Hypnosis allows us to safely explore and resolve these deeper drivers, so the urge to drink naturally reduces over time.

No, it’s not always necessary to stop drinking completely.

Many people come to hypnotherapy because they want a healthier relationship with alcohol, rather than total abstinence. Once the unconscious need to drink has been resolved, some people choose to stop completely, while others find they can drink moderately without losing control. This decision usually comes naturally, without pressure.

Trying to stop drinking only using your willpower often creates a sense of restriction and deprivation.

This can actually increase cravings and cause you to fixate on the idea of not being allowed to drink. This is sometimes called the “forbidden fruit effect.” If alcohol is being used to manage anxiety, stress or emotional discomfort, willpower alone won’t resolve the root cause — which is why many people find themselves stuck in the same cycle despite repeated attempts to stop.

Yes. Hypnotherapy is a gentle, non-invasive approach that works at your pace. You remain fully aware and in control throughout the session. The aim is not to force change, but to help you understand and release the emotional patterns that are keeping the drinking behaviour in place.

Binge drinking is often linked to:
  • Anxiety or social anxiety
  • Low self-esteem or fear of rejection
  • Stress or emotional overwhelm
  • Past trauma or difficult childhood experiences
  • Using alcohol to cope, relax or feel confident

Hypnotherapy helps identify which of these apply to you and works to resolve them at a subconscious level.

Yes. Many people worry that without alcohol they’ll lose a part of themselves — their confidence, sociability or sense of fun. Hypnotherapy helps you rebuild your sense of identity without alcohol, so confidence and self-assurance come from within rather than from a substance.

This varies from person to person and depends on your history with alcohol and the issues beneath it. Some people notice significant changes after a small number of sessions, while others benefit from a slightly longer process. This can be discussed during your initial consultation.
