What is an Attachment Style?

The term “attachment style” (technically attachment category or tendencies), refers to the way you connect with other people and form relational bonds. These tendencies are formed early on in our lives and are defined by the connection/attachment bonds we have with our parents or main caregivers. 

The earliest research conducted around this, by John Bowlby and Mary Ainsworth, identified 4 major attachment categories:

  • Secure attachment
  • Anxious/ambivalent attachment
  • Avoidant attachment
  • Disorganised
